  1. Poor times in Ireland.
There was a man living in Mooretown, Rathcoffey, Co Kildare, named Silvester Byrne, He was a big strong man and had very hard times with poverty and hard work. He was 6 feet 4 inches high and weighed 15 stones.
He walked 7 miles to mow meadows. He worked from 2 o clock in the morning till 12 o clock mid-day. He was able to mow 1 acre of meadow witha scythe in that time and his wages was 1S-6D. In winter time he made shores for farmers near his home. He lived on two noggins of stirabout a day. His wife would go with one in the monring and would bring him a raw turnip. He would take a bit of it and throw it on in fromlof hime while he worked along the shore. He would open 6 perches long and five feet deep to eard 10 D a day. His son who was getting the old pension when he dies 35 years ago told this story to my Daddy.
