“About 70 years ago there was scarcely any roads in the mountain districts.”
There was a path made by a number of people to get to the chapel, shops or to any other place. For want of a road the farmers who kept a horse could keep no cart, as the horse was compelled to carry the farmer's produce to the market on his back, and the provisions they might buy in the same way home.
Where roads crossed rivers no bridges were built, just pavements which enabled carters and people to pass. In floods these places could not be crossed and parents were often obliged to accompany their children going to school.
