  1. In this district coins are called by different names. The penny is sometimes called a "wing", twopence a "duce", sixpence a "tanner," a shilling a "bob", a half-crown a "half-dollar," five shillings a "dollar," and a pound is called by different names such as a "quid" and a "ploughman." Sovereigns and half-sovereigns have gone completely out of use in this district as have also the crown, the guinea and the four shilling piece.
Pedlars and dealers visit our house still. As my father is a tailor they buy rags and clippings from him. They call about once every six months. The clippings from all woollen tweed are sold by weight. The pedlar allows my father three shillings and sixpence per stone or as he calls it three and a tanner.
