- The bread the people used in olden times was made from oaten meal. It was baked on a gridde and on a brick beside the fire. It was very wholesome but it was very hard and crusty. I think the people nowadays would not be able to eat it as their teeth are not so strong. It was only about one inch in thickness. It is said that there was a poor fellow and he would say I wish I had my flag licked, my prayers said, and I in bed. He said that his flag was the oaten bread, and he would lick the butter off it.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
