The master was not a stranger and his name was Edward Mo Phillips. He went home at night. His pay for the instruction he gave was about eight pounds per year.
In the townland of Cornasoe there was another hedge school called Drumgarley. This school was in a tent and the master's name was Master Farmer. He was not a stranger and he lived very near the school. The people who had children at it collected money and paid the master five shillings per week. The subjects which were taught in these schools were Arithmetic, reading, writing, and catechism. Irish was not spoken by master or pupils. The books which were used were first and second class English book. Writing was done with pencil and slate. The children were seated on blocks of wood.
