  1. An Old Song

i have often head heard it said

This song was made about two farmers Felix Beagin of Carn now dead & John Croarkin of Greenans Cross who took a field of con - acre in Drumhirk (parish of Aghabog) to sow flax. The flax was a failure.
I have often read & heard it said
    A lot depends on chance
And many for their rise or fall
    That reason now advance.
It is also said that those who sow
    Reap as surely will
But some who plant a crop of flax
    That same may never pull.
When in the ground the seed goes down
In the month of merry May
    Sure every little insect then
    With it begins to play.
    And if insects were rewarded
    For all their eating work
    There'd be millionaires in Monaghan
In a place they call Drumhirk.
    Felix Beagin has some daughters
    Who would make bonny brides
And near him at Old Greenan's Cross
