  1. Over thirty years ago my mother remembers an industry called crochet or lace-making and many girls earned a lot of money by it.
    The flax was scutched at home long ago and dried over a fire made outside. Then it was rolled with rollers. Then it was scutched with a handle and a stalk. Then it was made up in stone-weights and sold.
    Another old industry was the home churning. When the whole milk was thickened and gathered in crocks it was churned at home.
