- In olden times there were great games of football played in this district, and also hurling matches, that is commonly called Sliabh Luachra, and the other side of the Blackwater was called Duhallow. There were brave men on each side of the Blackwater. They played great games at Lacka (Ballydesmond, Co Cork) where the creamery stands now. The hurley ball was composed of curled hair, and tightly covered outside with the skin of a sheep. At that time the hurleys were got out of furze ditcher, and nicely shaped and turned. There used be a referee on each side on horseback.
