- It was all matchmaking in olden times. The man that was going to get married sent word by a specially appointed messenger to the house of the lady he desired to marry. If she consented to marry him the people of both the young man and the young lady appointed or or fixed a night that they could meet.Then the young man together with his father and a friend went on the appointed night to the young lady's house bringing with them a bottle of whiskey or two.Then after a long debate etc. they made the "match" they all agreed that this young man and young lady were to be married.The young man's father generally consented to hand over his farm or land to his son, while the young lady was to receive so much money from her parents as dowry called her "fortune".They pent appointed a day for the marriage Then they invited the relations of both the young(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
