There was a hedge- school a few yards from my grandmothers house. She is eighty six now. She was going to it herself. They were taught in some farmer's cow-house. They were taught by a man named Mr. Mac Barthy. The teacher stayed in the farmers house. They had only lain English books. No Irish was spoken by the masters or children. If the children were heard speaking Irish they would be laughed at. If they were in late for school in the morning, they would be made kneel for nearly three hours. If they missed their lessons at school they would be slapped with a cat - of - nine - tails.
Writing was done with quill or with a pencil on a slate. They had no writing pens only the quills. They were seated on planks of timber, with stones under them to keep them up.
