The Penal Times
Once upon a time a rich Catholic farmer who held a large estate towards the North of Kerry, drove to the nearest town with four fine cows. At the inn where he generally stayed, he was talking with some of his neighbours, when a Protestant farmer came in and put down £14 on the table, On doing so he said to the Catholic farmer "your cows are mine." On hearing this, the Catholic farmer excused himself and left the room. Not long afterwards four shots were heard, and everyone knew that he preferred to shoot his cows than to gratify his spiteful enemy. He was never again seen driving to town with four such fine cows.
