   boiled, peeled and mashed. They were then put into a dish, mixed with a little flour, some soda, a little butter, and wet with some milk. They were then worked out flattened, cut into squares, and baked in a griddle.

   The stampy was usually left some days before it was eaten but the potato-cake was used hot. The principle means of baking in those days was the griddle and the bastible oven. On special occasions the cream-cake was made. The flour and soda were wet with sour, thick cream. I was then baked in the bastible oven.

   When the flour was scarce a kind of bread was made out of Indian meal. It was usually wet with boiling water. It was then
