  1. Every Irish feast has its own custom. I am now going to relate how Saint Stephen's Day is kept in Ireland.
    During the day both girls, and boys dress themselves in funny clothes and having captured a wren they go from house to house singing the following song:
    The wren, the wren
    The king of all birds,
    On St. Stephen's Day
    He was caught in the furze,
    Although he be little
    His family is great,
    So down with the kettle
    And give us a treat,
    Up with the kettle
    Down with the pan
    Give us a penny
    To bury the wren.
    Indeed, every house, even the poor give them something.
