  1. Before medical science had attained the high position which it holds in the world today the Irish people especially those living in remote areas - had to depend chiefly on natures remedy - herbs - for the cure of the many diseases to which the human body is heir to.
    In this way we find the sour, milky juice of the dandelion root used and highly recommended for certain forms of nervousness and general debility.
    The garlic plant pounded and applied in poultice like fashion, was considered a cure for sore throat.
    Another cure extensively used and recommended for the disease. Ring worm was a mixture of tobacco, garlic and unsalted butter.
    Water-Cress procured from the side of a running stream was a supposed cure for anaemic people.
    Rheumatism - that painful disease so prevalent in this country owing to its humid climate - was greatly eased if not cured by the constant use of celery as a food.
