- Illness + Cures.
A very common ailment - according to my mother (Mrs Finnegan aged 73) - in the old days and one which was cured by some local people was called the Shilly Shaw (sineadh-sean) fallen palate. There were men in the district - one Micheal Rogers who lived in Townabrack - another in Monasteraden - Scanlon who could cure it. They used to take a hold of some few ribs of hair on the crown of the head and pull them with a quick jerk - the patient could always feel the click of the little tongue back into place - and the cure was completed by the application of a roasted potato on the top of the head.
For a headache there were people who measured the head and read prayers and gave what they called a gospel. Many people believed this and only last year I was speaking to a young woman who had travelled over 8 miles to(continues on next page)
