Bread is usually made every day. First there is a big fire put down, and when it is well kindled, the oven is left at the fire to be heated, then the cake is put in, and coals put over head.
It takes a half-hour to bake the cake, and from a half-hour to an hour for to bake a sweet cake. If there is to-much fire put to the cake it will burn.
The way the cake is made is first the flour is got in a basin, and its mixed up and down, then, soda, cream of tarter and salt is put in, and it is mixed up again, then there is buttermilk or thick milk put into it and it is mixed up again with a spoon. Then it is taken out and left on a bread-board.
It is rolled out with a rolling board and put down to bake. Oat-meal bread they had long ago.
This is how they made it.
