This industry of basket-making was carried on in our district. It was carried on in olden times also. Sally-rods are used to make creels and baskets of all sorts.
They are cut and steeped in water. When they are a few days in water they are taken out and dried. They are then a light brown colour.
Five score of rods will make the creel, three score for the welt and two for the errsh.
I have often seen a creel or basket being made.
The mouth of the creel or basket is made first.
Forty rods are woven first the next twenty lift the eye.
A knife and hammer and a spike of iron are the tools used for making a creel or basket.
Some people make them especially for sale, they sell them in different towns and obtain a good price for them.
