- On St Brigids Eve which is the last night in January there are crosses made which are called St. Brigid's Crosses. There are still made in some houses. The oldest female member of the family pulled a bunch of rushes and when she came to the door She was invited in and she carried the rushes over the threshold.
Then she made a cross this being done, by dividing the rushes into six parts and then forming them into a cross. When the cross was made supper tea and pancakes were partaken of, and finally the cross was hung from the rafters inside the house over the door and in the out houses.
The Girdle of St Brigid was made of straw or rushes, plaited trebly with three crosses worked in. It is still made in some houses.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
