- In this district long ago when the penal laws were in full power in Ireland, the people were tantalised by the severe laws and rules which the English people placed upon the Irish. They had not permission to go to Mass on Sundays and holidays of the year, and the Irish people could not send their children to a catholic school. The Irish priests were hunted about from place to place and they had to say mass privately in hollows and glens of the district.
There are some places in the district still to be seen which were connected with the penal laws of olden times. Some of those places are known as the "low Valley" the "Mass hill" and the "priest's path". The "Mass hill" was shaped like an Altar and it was(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
