- The bread they used long ago was oaten bread. Some oat meal was put into a basin and wet with water. It was (made) then dried with more meal. A girdiron used be put up facing the fire and the oaten cake would be baked on that iron.Oat meal porridge was a good part of their food. When the men used go to their work they woudl go fasting until about twelve o'clock and then they would go home eat oat meal porridge.
