  1. St Parick's Day falls on 17th March and it is well to observe it as a holiday in remembrance of our Irish Saint. In olden times people looked forward to pleasure and amusement on that day. It was a great day for fairs and markets where young people gathered together for pleasure and business combined.
The girls were prettily dressed in gay colours and always wore green ribbon either in bands or bows upon their hair. The men wore shamrocks which was carefully picked and arranged in their buttonholes. Very often the men came from these fairs or markets "Mag-a-lore". But provided they reached their own houses without causing any trouble, they were usually forgiven the offence of the extra glass by their better half. This was called "drowing the Sharmock" which was only a friendly way of greeting one another.
