- There lived a man in Ireland long ago named named Gobniu who was a [smith?]. He had a wonderful cow. She had so much milk in one day as twenty cows would have in a month. She was known everywhere as the Cow of Plenty.
Balor of the Evil Eye wanted to get this fine animal and sent a man to steal her. The thief came in the dead of the night. Gobniu heard him and rose from his bed. He asked who was there but he got no answer. The thief crept away and Gobniu found his cow safe but her magic halter was gone. The thief brought it away with him. The cow always followed this halter and from that on Gobniu had to watch her day and night.
