  1. The houses in this district in olden times did not form groups or villages, but ranged detached in single file by the roadside. They were very numerous.
    They were built mostly of mud and small stones. There was a recess made on the kitchen wall for a "pouch bed" or "[?]." The roof was made of wattles covered with straws or rushes and sods and a network of straw or hemp ropes fashioned in iron or wooden spikes in the gables held the thatch down when the great Atlantic storm broke over the district.
