  1. The Famine

    Roinn Roinn Postáil
    During the year 1847 the famine came to Sligo. All the potato crops failed and the people died with hunger.
    Some of the people lived on oats eaten ran out of their pockets.
    After the famine followed a great plague of sickness. The sickness affected only the towns. In order that the sickness would not spread in the country as well as in the town, there was guards on all the roads letting nobody in or out of the towns.
    It is said that one man escaped out of the town of Sligo and he died not far from town at a place called Teesan.
    There was a tarred coat put around him until he was buried.
