- It is the custom among some people in this locality to go out and gather Mayflowers on May eve. After sunset is the proper time to gather them. These flowers are placed outside on the window sills Some are also scattered on the walks and paths near the house. The best flowers are brought into the house and placed in vases. Sometimes a little altar is erected and a picture of our Blessed Lady suitably placed on it or hung over it. Vases full of flowers are arranged on the altar.
The reason given for this is to pay respect to the mother of God so that she may protect the household from ill luck of all kinds during the year. The flowers strewed on the paths show that the Blessed Virgin is welcome.- Faisnéiseoir
