    Long ago many houses were made of wood and they were of a round shape. In these houses the fire was in the centre of the floor and there was a hole in the roof over the fire. The smoke went out from the fire by means of this hole. The fire was made of turf.
    There were no lamps used in olden times. Rush candles were used for giving light at night. They were made from rushes and animal fat
