  1. Most of the country houses have thatched roofs. The man who thatches a house is called a thatcher. He thatches the house with wheaten straw, rye straw, or oaten straw.
    Thatching is done more frequently with oaten straw than with any other straw as the oat crop is the most plentiful grain crop in Ireland. The oats are threshed in Autumn or early in winter. When the threshing is done the best of the straw is kept for thatching and the rest is used for fodder.
    The thatch is fastened on the roof of the house by ropes of straw or hempen ropes or by scallops made from hazel or salley rods.
    When thatching is done with ropes the straw is forst spread over the roof and is then
