It was a common sight to see a big boiler on the public roadway or street and a man in charge, cooking the porridge for the poor people who came and in their turn got the supply allotted to them.
   Some people had a very small supply of potatoes which they divided with their neighbours for seeds.
   In this way the crop of 1848 was raised when things began to improve.
