- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)deputed a young man named Charley Mooney to row the Excise Officer to the vessel in the harbour.
Mooney conveyed the Excise man to the steamboat, and then rowed him back when his work was done.
It was a lovely moonlight night, and at this time (12 o'clock midnight) the tide was well out. The Excise Officer and Mooney were drawing up the boat on the shore near the old Quay in Killybegs known as 'Kelly's Quay'.
Just then a terrible wailing sound was heard and scraping of feet on the shore.
The Excise Officer became alarmed and said to Mooney, "Did you hear that terrible noise." He was in fact about to run away with fear. "Ah!" said Mooney, "that is nothing at all. It is the noise of dogs over there under the gardens[?]".
