It is believed that by doing this serious diseases will not occur during the year, and nothing evil will happen to man or beast.
- In the olden times in the Parish of Ahamlish, (Barony of Carbury, Co Sligo) when the people had not got tallow candles or paraffin oil lamps, they made their own candles out of rushes.
First of all they cut the rushes. After that they got a piece of wood and made a hole in it.
Then they got a piece of iron and brought it to a blacksmith who made it into the shape of a fork. On the top of the fork were two holes, one for holding the candle and the other one for the spare rush.
