  1. Muckross Abbey was built in the year 1340 by McCarthy Mór for the Franciscans. It consisted of a Church and a Monastery. The ruins are still to be seen and are in a good state of preservation. The eastern windows being very beautiful still.
    It is said that McCarthy was told in a vision where to build the Abbey and that lake was an Carraig An Ceól. So he and his men went searching for that place but they searched in vain.
