“In the lands of Julia Quirke in Derrymore there are the remains of an old fort.”
In the lands of Julia Quirke in Derrymore there are the remains of an old fort. It is surrounded by a circular wall but this has disappeared on the eastern side. Holly trees grow in the fort. There are four stones in the centre of it and there is also a cave which leads to an underground passage.
It is said that there is gold hidden in the fort. A man named Griffin a Gleanna dreamt about the gold on three nights. He was told that he should carry a lighted candle and holy water and that the candle would be put out three times. He was also told to light it each time and not to get afraid.
He went to the fort on the fourth night and he dug a hole on the eastern side of it. He held digging until he reached a large stone that covered the gold. The candle was extinguished twice and he lit it each time. It was extinguished the third time and he got afraid. He ran home and left the hole opened.
The people working on the field filled the hole again with stones picked out of the meadows. The place can be seen at present.- Bailitheoir
