“On the 19th February, 1921Commander Michael Mc Elligott 6th Battalion IRA was killed in action...”
On the 19 th February, 1921 Commander Michael Mc Elligott 6th Battalion IRA was killed in action at Derrymore, near Tralee by Crown Forces. He was returning from a ballnight at Camp and he was accompanied by Patrick Garvey who was also in the IRA.
When they reached Derryquay they saw a large body of soldiers coming towards them from Tralee. The two men turned and drove their bicycle before the soldiers. At Derrymow Bridge they stopped to talk to some person on the road.
Then the soldiers came on and the two men ran down towards Derrymore Island. Garvey stopped when he reached the railway and he was arrested. Mc Elligott remained running but he was shot dead in a field near McKenna's house. A few night afterwards at Ballylongford the British paid dearly for their crime.
In January 1921 he sent a warning despatch from Listowel to Duagh and he informed the IRA there of the intentions of the Crown Forces and he saved them from being murdered by Mc Kinnon and his Murder Gang.- Bailitheoir
