Many years ago, when bailiffs and process-servers were frequently met with and evictions for non-payment of rent were a common occurrence there lived in Castlegregory a process-server named Giles Rae.He was hated by the people on account of the work he was doing, and though very often cautioned and threatened, yet he still kept on serving processes.One day it happened that he had eight ejectment processes to serve, n so he set out in his donkey and cart to deliver them. On the same day a man named Michael Bynane was drawing sea-weed and as he was coming along the road, he saw Giles Rae coming towards him. Michael acted quickly. To pull the horse load and all into the nearest field was only of a few moments. Then he ran into a house by the road-side, the owner of which was a man named Silvester Hennessey.He put his hand to the hob and took a fist of soot and smeared his face with it.
