It was in the year '46
When the poor lost the fruits of their labours,
And some by their harmless tricks,
Were endeavouring to plunder their neighbours.
The farmers were constantly watching
The police were double diligent,
Like Satan when cook in the kitchen,
Or Cooper when he became agent.
In December one evening I vow,
As the moon was upon the decline,
I went some way off with a cow,
That was ill with a pain of the mind
Returning with gratified feelings,
To make much delay I was loath,
I met with a bundle of peelers,
Wrapped carefully in their watch coats
