- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)over Ireland now. The children used to be taught in old barns in the Winter and in the fields in the Summer.
The teachers were paid by the children's parents according to their valuation. It is said that the children were very well educated. Irish was taught to the children by the hedge-school-master. They used to write on slates with pencils and sometimes with writing quills.

Mr Patrick Stack (58 yrs) Ballymcquinn, Ardfert - IIIIIn olden times they had no national schools but the children were sent to hedge schools. The master was paid by the children.
There was one of these schools in Lerrig. Ned Mahoney from Ardfert was the master. In these schools hey had no papers like we have now but they used to write with slates and pencils. They used to teach under hedges in fine weather and in old barns in Winter.
