In the year 1848, and 1849, the famine came to Ireland.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
and a big grave made and all were piled together. An old woman from Listowel named Mrs Hedderman said she remembered seeing a light burning all night long in the Listowel church yard, to give light to the people who were burying the dead from night till morning. The English sent over some potatoes, and the Russians sent corn meal, but the people did not know how to use it. They were mixing it with cold water and eating it. They were in a weak condition then, and it killed a lot of the irish people.
