  1. About 128 years ago there lived in the townland of Aughrim a family by the name of Hogan. Aughrim is situated adjacent to the village of Newtownsandes and is about seven miles from Listowel. The house they lived in was haunted. Every night before retiring to bed it was necessary to have the house well provided with a pail of spring water and a large fire on the hearth. After they had retired they were sure to hear the good people at work in the kitchen. The table was moved from the wal, and cups laid on it. Then they heard the kettle being filled and laid over the fire, as if preparing for a meal. It happened one night that the girl of the house whose turn it was to bring in the water forgot doing so
