This was another industry. It was made from brown sugar and water. For every pound of brown sugar there was nearly a cup of cold water. It was then hung over the fire in a pot called a skillet, and allowed to boil until it became quite thick. A large clean flag was greased with butter and the contents of the skillet poured over the flag. When it was cool enough to handle, it was then rolled up on a large iron spike attached to the wall.
