- The people of long ago never heard of parafin-oil electricity or other lights only the lights they had of their own such as splinters and candles. When they wanted to make candles they had to wait until they killed a cow and then got the substance of the tallow and put it into a mould and placed a strip of cotton thread in the middle for a wick. When these were not available they had a different way of making light for themselves such as splinters of bog-deal but these would not last as long as the candles. Some people earned their living by making those.
