In Cromwell's command in Ireland he worked cruel tyranny. When he came to Connaught he passed Sliabh-An-Iarann and he went to a hole in this mountain called "polty". He ordered his men to gather the people from miles around and he threw these into this bottomless hole. It is supposed that there is a serpent in it.

Cromwell's visit to Ireland did not affect this district very much. The only momento we have of him is a castle and a great area of land. They belonged to Seán Na gCeann. He was very tyrannical on the Catholics and therefore got the lands and castle from Cromwell. It was said that Cromwell and some of his men crossed Annaghkeenty Bog on their journey's through Eire - Bailitheoir
