- Long ago the people got married during Shrove and if possible on Shrove Tuesday as it was believed that the married couple would live a longer and happier life than if they got married on any other day or at any other time. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays were thought unlucky days for marriage. Money was always given but the poor people gave what ever stock or goods they could afford.
