- About sixty years ago Charley Carrol, John McWeeney and Pat Turbet were bringing a load of turf in a boat across Aughakilconnel Lough which is about a half a mile in width. When they were near the shore a storm arose and blew them out into the middle of the lake. The boat capsized and they were all thrown into the water. Charley Carrol and John McWeeney succeeded in swimming to the shore but the other man was drowned and his body was not found until a week after.
A boy from Sligo was visiting a house near Lough Scur. He went to the lake and getting an old boat there got into it. He rowed it with a stick and when he was out some distance he got out to bathe. He decided to row out further and he went into the boat. No sooner had he taken the stick in his hand than the boat struck a rock and it was dashed to pieces. When he was near the shore he got down in a hole and he was never seen again.- Bailitheoir
