    An old farmer and his wife lived near a ford on the Shannon.

    An old farmer and his wife lived near a ford on the Shannon. He was a quiet man but a bad worker. So his wife made him do the work inside while she took his place outside.
    After some years she got tired of this and made up her mind to get rid of him.
    "Seumas" said she one morning to him, "I think we ought to go over and look at that cornfield on the far side of the river".
    "Very well," said Seumas "anything you like" - and off they went.
    As he was making his way on the stepping stones across the ford,
