On Saint Stephen's Day men dress up and go around from house to house collecting money. They dance, sing and play music. The children go round with the wren. They use a box and in it they put the wren. They put ribbons on it.
They sing a song in English:
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds.
On Saint Stephens day he was caught in the furze.
Up with the kettle and down with pan.
Give us some money to bury the wren.
We chased the wren from rock to rock
We chased him into a public shop
We dipped his bill in a glass of beer
And we wish you all a happy new year.
On Saint Brigid's eve a number of people go round collecting money with a turnip made like a head. They call it the brídeóg. They have a little song:
Here's Saint Brigid dressed in white
Give us a penny to honour the night.
Shrove Tuesday evening is called "Pancake Night". On that night
