  1. There are five forges in the parish of Ballymacward. The smiths are Martin Wade of Tample, Woodlawn, County Galway, Pat Walsh of Gurteen, Woodlawn, County Galway, Brian Follan of Shanballard, Gurteen, Woodlawn, County Galway, Patrick Keane of Glantane, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway, Martin Egan of Attyregan, Ballymacward, Woodlawn, County Galway. All their ancestors were smiths. The forges are near cross-roads and streams. Martin Wades forge is thatched with rushes. Patrick Walshe's was thatched until about two months ago when it was burned and then he put a timber roof on it. There is a timber roof on Patrick Keanes, and Martin Egan's is roofed with timber. There is a tin roof on Brian Follans. There is one fireplace in each one of them. The bellows are made of leather and timber with a big shaft at the end of the bellows and you pull it down and it blows the fire. The tools the smith uses are the anvil, hammer, tongs, raspknife, pincers, sledge, cutter grinding stone, nails and bellows. The smith shoes horses, ponys, asses and wheels.
