- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)bellows in Galway. The bellows are made of leather and are used for blowing the fire. Blacksmiths use coal fires now but long ago they used turf fires. At that time when they were doing any special work such as making iron gates they used coal-turf which could only be got in Knockvanie bog. Blacksmiths come from all over the parish to Knockvanie bog for the coal-turf. The blacksmith uses a hammer, a sledge, a chissel, a pincers, a [?], vice and an anvil. He makes iron gates, tongs and shoes for horses and asses. Long ago blacksmiths made spades. These spades were much better then than those that are used now. He also mends ploughs and harrows and puts tyres on cart-wheels. He also turns a scythe and yolkes it to the pole. He does all his work inside except the shoeing of the wheels. There is a trough of water in the forge in which the blacksmith cools the horse-shoes and other things. The phrases you are as black as a smith and you are as strong as a smith are often used. When the people had toothaches they usually went to smith to get them drew. The smith was no more respected than any other tradesman of the district and he got no presents either.
