  1. The last of these old walls was taken away for roads over forty years ago. At one time a huge wall six or eight feet wide and a great height was round the hill of Drumlegere.
    The sheep were kept on the hill and herded by night afraid the wolf would come. There were two entrances to it and these had to be guarded by men and wolf hounds.
    During the day the sheep were let out to graze through the country.
    Michael Tiernan of Mahanagh Drumshanbo says that was the first use.
    Pat McRann of Drumlegere says that the walls were used during the Penal Days as a safe place to hide and keep good stock when the protestant planter was robbing the poor Irish.
    and that's why the wall remained so long.
    He was often employed digging out the stone for the roads.
