- There was once a man who when young was told by a fortune-teller that riches was in store for him. All his life he had lived in expectancy always dreaming of what he would do with his money when he should get it. One night he had a dream telling him that the fortune-teller's predictions would come true if he fulfilled three conditions. He was told in the dream that he should walk at twilight to an old castle known as "Caisleán an airgid" which was situated on a hillside about two miles away. He should stand under an old oak tree and leave no footprints and knock three times with his fist on the bark of the oak. He should do this on three consecutive evenings and on the third evening he would know how to acquire the riches which he was so anxious to have. He did as the dream directed and on the third evening he was standing under the oak tree and he saw a little wizened grey man sitting opposite under an old hawthorn. The little man was evidently unaware of the man's presence for he never raised his eyes from the shoe he was making. The gold seeker caught the little man and ordered him to tell him where he should find the gold which he had come for. After much persuasion the little man showed him a spot under the oak where he should dig and he should then find what he wanted.
