At this time there was a gentlemen shot in Briarfield. It was a foggy morning and the wrong landlord was shot. He was hid for three weeks and Ned was taken prisoner with another man.
They were brought to Galway jail and kept there for six weeks. Then the soldiers tried to turn them informers but they could not. At last Burke was released and Lohan was sentenced to death. He was brought from Galway jail to Briarfield a distance of twenty miles on foot. On the road in sight of his own house he was murdered.
